Facebook to build new data centre for archiving old photos and videos

CBR Staff Writer Published 22 February 2013

Facebook says that about 82% of its traffic is mainly focused on 8% of uploaded photos.

Facebook is planning to build a new cold storage data centre in Prineville, US to archive old photos, videos and posts which users don't regularly access.

The new centre will be the company's third data centre.

Facebook communication manager, Michael Kirkland, said the process will slow response time.

"The principle will be so that it doesn't impact the user experience -- so think about a matter of seconds, or milliseconds," Kirkland said.

Facebook reports that about 82% of its traffic is mainly focused on about 8% of its photos, and the new facility would be a more efficient way to store photos which are not frequently viewed by users.

The social networking company is planning to commence starting the storage facility during fall 2013.
